Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is the cancer of the Pancreas, an organ gland responsible for secreting not just the digestive juices but importantly the insulin. Pancreatic cancer is generally, growth of a malignant tumor inside the gland. Pancreatic cancer makes largest cause of death among all cancers.

Pancreatic cancer is particularly difficult to detect since all signs occur only after it has crossed the early stages. However, most of the times diabetics and people who are most likely to suffer from diabetes may suffer from this cancer. Higher numbers causes of deaths due to this cancer is because of the late detection of this cancer.

In USA alone almost 34,000 people die of this cancer each year, though the diagnosed are only approximately 37000. If this cancer is detected early there are chances that such people may be able to survive for up to five years after the therapy.

Pancreatic cancer can be divided into two different categories.

* One is the adenocarcinomas which is a serious type of cancer. Hardly any patients suffering from this cancer are likely to live more than 5 years. This, however, also depends on how far the tumor has developed and spread among the pancreas.

* Other type is the exocrine pancreas tumors, these are less serious and not very dangerous to life, one example is serous cystadenomas. People suffering from these cancers tend to live longer than those with the adenocarinomas. There is very strong possibility that people suffering from this cancer can live a longer life.

Though there are negligible symptoms of this cancer in its initial stages, following are the symptoms which are found mostly in all sufferers of pancreatic cancer:

* People may often feel loss of appetite, which may or may not be supported with vomiting and nausea.

* Another symptom is pain in the upper abdomen, which starts in upper abdomen and moves towards the back.

* People suffering from pancreatic cancer suffer weight loss;

* There may be occurrence of jaundice, people may experience yellowing of skin, eyes, urine, etc. this happens in cases of those people whose cancer is forming an obstruction to the bile duct.

Though pancreatic cancer can happen to anyone, following is the list of people who are most likely to suffer from this disease.

* People who smoke;

* Those suffering from diabetes mellitus;

* Those whose family has a prior history of this cancer;

* Those who suffer from obesity;

* Those whose diet consists of high amount of red meat and less vegetables;

* Males;

* People of African origin;

* People whose work involves use of highly toxic chemicals;

* People who suffer from periodontal diseases.

There are many some more specific symptoms however, these are some of the most important ones.

New 'biopsy in a blood test' to detect cancer

Scientists and cancer physicians have successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of an advanced blood test for detecting and analyzing circulating tumor cells -- breakaway cells from patients' solid tumors -- from cancer patients. The findings show that the highly sensitive blood analysis provides information that may soon be comparable to that from some types of surgical biopsies.
